tæraj
выражение упрека, чаще в устах женщин a rebuke, more often in the female speech tæraj! cytæ ӡūrys! ну тебя! что ты говоришь! come on! what are you saying! Может быть, 2-е лицо ед. ч. конъюнктива от не сохранившегося в других формах глагола tær-, *ter- со значением губить, гибнуть. Это значение выступает, в частности, в терять, тратить, травить, отрава, потрава и др. Если так, то tæraj означает собственно чтобы тебе сгинуть. Ср. fesæfaj, bast’ælaj того же значения. It may be the 2nd person singular of the conjunctive from the verb tær-, *ter- not preserved in other forms, with the meaning to ruin, to perish. This meaning appears, in particular, in terjatʼ, tratitʼ, travitʼ, otrava, potrava, etc. If this is true, then tæraj actually means may you perish. Cf. fesæfaj, bast’ælaj of the same meaning.
