The meaning huge number, multitude, multitude of people, big crowd etc. ( III 1246. — Vernadsky, For R. Jakobson, 1956, p. 59; Studi medievali, Spoleto, 1963 IV 8) is not confirmed. Thus, the comparison with tumane, tьma 10.000 (Vernadsky, loc. cit. — Popov. Iz istorii leksiki yazykov Vostočnoj Evropy [From the history of the vocabulary of the languages of Eastern Europe]. Leningrad, 1957, p. 41, fn. 4) hangs in the air Можно возводить к taumāyā taumā родня родни, отдаленная родня. Ср. taumā- род, taoxman- семя родня, tuxm семя, tōm, tōhm семя, род, tōhmak семя, происхождение. Из иранского идут tohm род ( 253), tʼomi род, поколение ( 165, 188, 379–380). Для осетинского не исключена контаминация с tūma потомок от tū- родиться ( III 1517).Melanges Benveniste 1–2. Can be traced back to taumāyā taumā relatives of relatives, distant relatives. Cf. taumā- family, taoxman- seed relatives, tuxm seed, tōm, tōhm seed, family, tōhmak seed, origin. From Iranian there are tohm family ( 253), tʼomi family, generation ( 165, 188, 379–380).
