Геминация согласного в производных формах (tyx — tyxxæj) нередкое явление в осетинском; ср. tas страх — tæssæj от страха. Folk etymology understands it as ablative case of the word tyx might and thus is identified with tyxæj (tyxxæj) by force (hence the variation of cases in Digor: tuxxæj || tuxxæn). It cannot be said that such an understanding is without foundation; cf., for example, v silu because of. But, on the other hand, it is difficult to consider the complete consonance with the Mongolian postposition as an accident tuxaj about, concerning, because of, for the sake of ( 847–848): man tuxaj = max tyxxæj about us, eneen tuxaj = ūj tyxxæj about this, jaγun u tuxaj? = cæj tyxxæj? about what?, for what?. The contamination of tyxæj from tyx strength with the Mongolian postposition tuxaj may have taken place, and moreover, Mongolian contributed to the development of semantics from the meaning because of to the meaning about, concerning. Gemination of a consonant in derivative forms (tyx — tyxxæj) is not uncommon in Ossetic; cf. tas fear — tæssæj out of fear.
