Goes back to warman- from the stem war-, wer- to close, to cover ( 1160–1162). The same stem is recognizable in Ossetic wart shield. The original meaning, therefore, is shelter. Cf. barm, warm reservoir for (rain) water, pool, gwarm puddle in the river bed ( 1947–1948 XX 3–4, p. 288); maybe warm- in wrm’yčyh (…wrmʼyčyh ptγwʼyʼnt …they kill in a dungeon? 2272); further bārmana- reservoir, place of confinement, prison ( VI 234; 1954, p. 28), varman- armour, enclosure. The semantics of an enclosure is also reflected in orm wall (Belardi. Handes Amsorya, X—XIII. Vienne, 1961, p. 616). To Iranian are adjacent varm snare, net, trapping net and vermak blanket, and also warm Höhle, locative warmaṃ ( 139). Beyond Indo-Iranian cf. ἔρυμα protection, cover, ῥῦμα protection, refuge. — From Alanic comes verem pit, vault (Munkáczi, IV 380, V 321. — 39). Just as Alanic xīd bridge entered into Hungarian on the one hand and into Georgian on the other, thus Alanic entered into both these languages; cf. ormo pit. Also related are wor, or, or ditch.Ws.
