От базы wai-, и. е. wei- вить, гнуть и пр. были производные как с формантом -ti- (waiti- ива), так и с формантом -tu-; ср. větvь, ветвь, witwan, vîtuõls ива, výtulas пучок (соломы и т. п.), vyt̃ùvai палка, на которую наматывается пряжа, мотовило, ἴτυς дуга, изгиб, обод колеса. Для ос. следует, вероятно, исходить из значения ива: предмет был назван по материалу — изделие из ивы. Ср. для семантики darvi- ложка от dāru дерево; lъžica, лъжъка, ложка, возможно, связано с лоза.1Крайне сомнительные этимологии слова ложка см.: II 53 (с несуществующим ос. alịgdịn делать надрез). — Tomashek ( 799, 855) возводит к базе wad- вести и сопоставляет wadh, wiédh рукоять, а также vadha- Streitkolben, Wurfkeule. From the base wai-, Indo-European wei- twist, bend etc. there were derivatives both with the affix -ti- (waiti- willow), and with the affix -tu-; cf. větvь, vetv', witwan, vîtuõls ива, výtulas a bundle (of straw, etc.), vyt̃ùvai stick on which yarn is twisted, reel, ἴτυς arc, bend, wheel rim. For Ossetic one should, perhaps, proceed from the meaning willow: the object was named according to its material — willow product. Cf. for semantics darvi- spoon from dāru wood; lъžica, lъžъka, ložka, probably, it is connected with loza.Extremely dubious etymologies of the word ložka see: II 53 (with nonexistent Ossetic alịgdịn make an incision). — Tomashek ( 799, 855) traces to the base wad- lead and compares it with wadh, wiédh handle, also vadha- Streitkolben, Wurfkeule. Not to mention the dubious semantics, the vocalization of the Ossetic word prevents this etymology. — See also and .
