Вторую часть (skʼæl) можно в этом случае сблизить с другими осетинскими ботаническими терминами: skʼælʒo полынь, xsæly можжевельник, д. skʼeldu брусника; см. эти слова; к приведенным там соответствиям следует добавить σκίλλα, scilla морской лук. Стоит отметить, что одна из разновидностей занимающего нас корнеплода зовется x˳yjy x˳yskʼæl свиной . Такое название могло появиться, когда говорящие перестали осознавать, что в слове уже наличествует x˳y свинья. По образоваиию ср. такие русские ботанические термины как свинорой, конский щавель, мышиный горошек, змеиный горец, куриное просо. It is possible that it should be divided x˳y-skʼæl swine skʼæl. The second part (skʼæl) can in this case be brought closer to other Ossetic botanical terms: skʼælʒo wormwood, xsæly juniper, Digor skʼeldu lingonberry; see these words; to the correspondences given there should be added σκίλλα, scilla squill. It is worth noting that one of the varieties of this root vegetable is called x˳yjy x˳yskʼæl swine . Such a name could appear when the speakers ceased to realize that in the word x˳y swine is already there.
