Goes back to ham-čyā-, fusion of the preverb æm- (← ham-) with the verb čā- (čyā- from k˳ye-) to rest, to enjoy etc. Cf. ančay- (ʼnčʼy) to cease, to stop. Without a preverb cf. šād, šāt, šāt merry tsata [= (æn)-cad] happy, rich, šāta-, šyāta-, past participle of šā-, šya- to rejoice, šāti- joy, happiness, šiyāti- joy quies quiet (n.). Also related, with a different preverb: po-čiti, pokoj (cf. æn-coj). For the correspondence of š — c cf. cæwyn to go (, XXXVIII 431). The meaning to lean is possibly the result of contamination with the verb sray- to lean (see asīn ladder). Cf. . 22. — Ws. Miller.
