A Pre-Iranian initial group sn- either often lost s-, or saved it with a prothetic x- in Iranian (Bartholomae, I 36, § 86). As a result, from the same basis, we could have two options: n- and xšn-. So, in Ossetic from the base *sna-, on the one hand, there is najyn bathe, nakæ swimming, on the other hand — xsynæxsnun wash; cf. from the basis *snau-, on the one habd, nwar vein, on the other hand — xsnūdyn twist. The basis *snā- is well represented in Iranian and other Indo-European languages. For the material below ( 152), one could add ʼxšwny- wash (?) ( 21, 32), bināj (wi-snā-) wet, moisturize ( 284), usňān the name of the herb used for washing, Salicornia, Salsola, from uz-xšnāna-, cf. xsæn. — Zero vowel root in xsyn refers to a strong step in and in xsadæxsnad (snāta → xšnāta-).
