Первоначальное значение , несомненно, амбивалентное: действовать на пользу или во вред к.-н.; это доказывается наличием таких выражений, как xærzaūdæn kænyn действовать на пользу и fydaūdæn kænyn действовать во вред, где первоначально двоякое значение уточняется в двух противоположных направлениях с помощью xærz- доброе и fyd дурное. В современном употреблении позитивное значение возобладало над негативным, как это видим и в других случаях, ср. arfæ благословение, warzyn любить. См. . Fusion of the preverb a- with the verb ūdynodyn to endeavour, which is also used on its own. The original meaning of is without doubt ambivalent: act to smb.’s benefit or detriment; this is confirmed by the existence of such expressions as xærzaūdæn kænyn act to the benefit and fydaūdæn kænyn act to the detriment, where the originally dual meaning of is specified in two opposite directions using xærz- good and fyd bad. In modern usage, the positive meaning prevailed over the negative, as also seen in other cases, cf. arfæ blessing, warzyn to love. See .
