There is an obvious connection with cʼqali water. Probably, we deal not with a borrowing but with an old substrate word. For the full vocalism in cæqal cf. ‘fire’ ( cxeli), Digor ‘slave’ ( glexi), ‘bribe’ ( krtami), ‘chatterbox’ ( qbedi) etc.; ‘splash’ represents the variantion of the same word which is percieved now as a sound symbolism.%n120, 325, 526.
