The word relates to an onomatopoetic type ср || kp || tp which is used for denoting ‘round’, ‘outstanding’, ‘prominent’ etc. in Ossetic and many other languages (see the word ‘round’ for further information). First of all, close correspondences are found in Caucasian languages. The correspondence of cʼam hair (in sa-cʼm-is-i haircloth, cʼam-cʼam-i eyelash) is found in Mingrelian cʼobi (), which is equal to cʼopp. Cf. also cʼopʼi high cap (), čʼopiani kudi a cap with a pointed top [Khevi, p. 190 (in Georgian)], tʼup fell. Beyond Caucasian region čub, top ( Zopf) top, crest, top sphere, ball, töpe, tepe top, hill, tap top (91). By the law of splitted meaning it could denote ‘tail’ and so on; cf. čupa tail, dead end of the fishpot.%n104, 326, 329.
