The stem čit- presented here completely coincides either phonetically or semantically with čьt- in po-čit-atʼ, po-čët, čt-itʼ. Cf. the following in Iranian languages: *čēt-βand(čytβnt) honour. Other matches are slightly further by the meaning: *čētak(čutk) ghost, ciθä- requital, punishment; cf. čiti- requital, τιμή rating, honour. The stem *čit-, *čait- which is also found in Digor ‘reproach’ represents the long version of the root čay-, kay- ‘give honour’ which is also found in the following words: ‘glory’, ‘rumour’, Digor ‘revenge’, æv-ǧid ‘guarantee’ [see ].
