Возможно также, что старая, чисто осетинская (скифская) форма *færda(n)k (ср. pwrδʼnk) изменилась под влиянием palang. В основе древнеиранского названия лежал, по-видимому, корень означавший ‘пестрый’, ‘яркий’ и т. п. Этот корень сохранился в ос. ‘самоцвет’, ‘бусина’.%n145. — 71. Cf. pṛāng, palang panther, leopard, pwrδʼnk leopard, pṛdāku- tiger, leopard. If the Ossetic word had been original and had traced back to pṛdāku-, we would have had *færdak. The form fælank forces to think about the borrowing from Persian (where I is regularly from rd). The borrowing must have been rather long ago, when the law of transition p→f was still in effect (see about this under the word ). It is also possible, that the old purely Ossetic (Scythian) form *færda(n)k (cf. pwrδʼnk) was changed under the influence of palang. The ancient Iranian name was apparently based on the root meaning ‘multicoloured’, ‘bright’, etc. This root was preserved in Ossetic ‘gem’, ‘bead’.%n145. — 71.
