A locative case of a not retained independently word *færc, which probably traces back to paršti- ‘back’ (as for the phonetic development, cf. ← aršti- ‘spear’). Therefore, the exact meaning of the postposition is ‘behind the back’, ‘under protection’ (dæ færcy = ‘behind your back’, ‘under your protection’ = ‘thanks to you’). Cf. *parč (prčh) back, protection, support (62), paršti- back.
