Traces back to *Iranian vi-gand-, the fusion of the preverb vi- with the stem gand- ‘to desecrate’ etc. The same stem is retained in the fusion of another preverb: fæl-ǧændun (← *pari-gand) ‘to paint’. — The lexicalized past participle is present in qæstæ | iǧæstæ ‘desecration’ etc. The verb ga(n)d-: gasta- is Pan-Iranian, it traces back to Indo-European *g˳edh- (*g˳endh-). Cf. gand stench, ganda stinking, gandīdan to stink, gandag nasty, valagandan to dirty, ɣandəl to revolt, ɣond bad (?), *ɣandak(ɣndʼk, ɣntʼk) bad, evil, *ɣaδken (ɣδkʼyn) nasty, ɣanč (← *ganti-) stink, ganti- stink, gasta- nasty, evil (= Ossetic ǧæstæ, past participle from *gand-), gandha- smell. The meaning ‘nasty’ developed from the meaning ‘stench’, cf. Ossetic | fud ‘nasty’, ‘evil’ from *puta- ‘rotten’, ‘stinkinh’. Beyond the bound of Iranian languages the Slavic group is the closest semantically to Ossetic: gadь, gad vermin, gaditʼ to make dirty, gadkij nasty, gadostʼ nasty thing etc. Cf. , | iǧæstæ.%n63.
