Этимология затруднена неясностью звуковых отношений между иронской и дигорской формой. Последняя, по-видимому, архаичнее, а иронская — результат метатезы: iʒæǧnæ → *yzyǧn → yznyǧ. Если так, то дигорскую форму можно возводить к *vi-čaga-na и связать с основой čag (čak), которая распознается в , и др. Ср., с другой стороны, чага трут , чaг лучина. The etymology is impeded by the vagueness of sound relations between Iron and Digor forms. The latter is apparently more archaic, and the Iron form is the result of metathesis: iʒæǧnæ → *yzyǧn → yznyǧ. If this is so, then the Digor form can be traced to *vi-čaga-na and connected to the stem čag (čak), which is recognized in , etc. Cf., on the other hand, čaga tinder , čag splinter.
