Is it a Caucasian word? Cf. eng cheese, ingiri cold whey? Bailey (XX 51) traces it back to *angaina-, noting the reconstructed Iranian *angu- ‘spicy, strong in taste and smell’. However, it has neither spicy taste, nor strong smell that ingyn has.
