Perhaps, it goes back tomarya- (→ mailya- → mel) from mel- dark, black etc. 720 f.: mala- dirt, μέλας black, dark, melas blue, melns black, Mal spot etc. Although phonetically and semantically, nothing prevents us from considering the Ossetic mīl | mel to be original, the lack of Iranian correspondences suggests that this word could have been a loanword from μέλας back in the Scythian era.
