Перс. nārīn тонкий, изящный производят от nār гранат (), что семантически не очень убедительно; заимствованное из персидского narin означает не только тонкий, но узкий (о талии, о ткани, как ос. ). It is believed that the Indic word is a nominalization of an old adjective with the meaning tight, narrow.Charpentier, XXVI—XXVII 125: Eigentlich ist nun naraka- m. The same development is observed in Ossetic: from the adjectival meaning narrow, tight to the nominal ravine, gorge. Hence Narga name of a gorge. Attested in Scythian toponymy: Νάραϰον στόμα (Arrianus) name of one of the branches of the Danube delta, literally narrow sleeve ( στόμα estuary, bay, entrace, passage, river branch), Naracustoma (Plin., Amm. Marc.), Νάρηϰος (Apoll. Rhod.). Cf. in etymology and semantics nōr bay with narrow entrance, narrow gulf (Persson, 35, p. 207. — Wessén. Våra ord. Stockholm, 1969, pp. 283–284. Cf. further narak narrow ( 16), narai thin, narrow, naru, nearu, narrow. nārīn thin, elegant is sometimes derived from nār pomegranate (), which is semantically not very convincing; the Persian loanword narin means not only thin, but also narrow (of waist, fabric, like Ossetic ). naria and nare, nrai hell — at least in semantics — are obviously dependent on Sanskrit.
