В современном осетинском языке tænæg не может быть эпитетом дерева, но в прошлом могло быть иначе; ср., например, в русском тонкая рябина, тонкая береза. If the original meaning was slender, thin (there is no certainty, since the word is poorly documented), then it can be traced to fra-tanu-ka- from tanu- slender; see tænæg. In Modern Ossetic tænæg cannot be an epithet of a tree, but in the past it could have been otherwise; cf., for example, tonkaja rjabina thin rowan, tonkaja berëza thin birch.
