This word should perhaps be traced back to Indo-European skerbh- scrape etc. (sk- → s-, as in etc., bh → f, as in , etc.). Cf. in this case skrebu, skrabu, skrabt scrape, scratch, sceorpan scrape, schraffen strip ( 943).Is šap- (from sarp-) clean from mud, wipe (Friedrich, 1968 V 88) a cognate? Cf. also šarpat' scrape, scrub, tear, rob (Gogol, Chapygin), šarpati tear, strip, szarpač tear, scutch. — The other opportunity is, assuming quite regular development säpär- → säf°r → særf-, to see there one of the Turkic-Alanian-Hungarian isoglosses (see: 525 ff.); cf. səpər-, səbər-, seber-, sibir- sweep, sweep up ( IV 668, 671. — Russko-tatarskij slovarʼ [Russian-Tatar dictionary] Kazan, 1971, p. 321. — Russko-karačaevo-balkarskij slovarʼ [Russian-Karachai-Balkarian dictionary]. Moscow, 1965, p. 269), also seperni id., sepró broom. — šarp- in šarpat', obšarpannyj, probably, is from Alanian.
