The combination of tar- (with the regular weakening of the vowel a → æ: 2071) and nyxnix. The second part itself already means forehead (see ²nyxnix ). The first part is retained in the meaning of chest (see ), but previously it also meant forehead; cf. ttāra-, tār forehead, tārtop. To the same, perhaps, -thear in air-thearforefront, east. Etymologically, as well as by the fluctuating of meanings forehead || chest cf. also stirna forehead with στέρνον chest. The necessity of supplying the word nyx forehead with the determinative tar of the same meaning arose when the homonymy of nyxnix forehead and nyxnix nail emerged. — Cf. ²tar, ²nyx..
