Iranian *tāra- could mean chest, forehead, crown (= convex, protruding front); cf. ttāra- forehead, *tār (t’r) forehead, taarandara body (? 112), tār top, crown, tāra crown, thigh (), tārāk hill, mound, top, tōr top ( 247), tur(eq) crown of head ( 56), tor(k) id., οτέρνον chest. In Ossetic the meaning of forehead is preserved in the compound tær-nyx | tær-nix forehead, q. v. — The initial i- in itaræ either goes back to vi- (*vi-tāra-), or represents the conjunctive article. — From Ossetic comes t’ar woman's breast ( II 507). — See also tarʒæǧdæn.Bailey, BSOAS 1963 XXVI 83.
