The base tak- is revealed in a number of words with the following meanings. 1. rapid motion, flow: tæxyn to fly, taǧd quick, tæx tense, tæʒyn to flow by drops; 2. turn, rotation, twisting: fældaxyn, fældæxyn (pari-tak-) roll over, yzdaxyn, yzdæxyn (*uz-tak-) to turn , tag (tāka-) thread, ændax (ham-tāka-) string (twisted), taxynæg sausage; 3. decoration: taxun dress up. Are we dealing with one or more homonymous roots here? If one, what meaning should be considered key in the search for an etymological solution? It is impossible to give a categorical answer to both these questions. Rotationcan be associated with movement, and decoration was understood, perhaps, as a transformation (of the less attractive into the more attractive). In any case, taxun to dress up should be related to pardāxtan : pardāz- meaning to decorate, to clean up (formally = fældaxyn). — Ws.
