Cf. tona- abrade, take away by force, rob, tonaw plunderage, tonawčə robber, tonu- rob ( III 1176. — 488). tonaw robbery, trophy is present in toponymy: Tonaw ülešgen töbe Trophy dividing hill = Trofejnaya gora trophy mountain (Kokov, Shahmurzaev. Balkarskij toponimičeskij slovarʼ [Balkar toponymic dictionary]. Nalchik, 1970, p. 11, 122). Folk etymology associates it with tonyn tear.
