Ср. tanīdan вить, плести, tatan : tan- плести, tān- : tānt натягивать основу при тканье ( 242), tun- : tönd разрывать тесто на куски для лепешек ( II 253), tan- в us-tan- протягивать, воздевать (руки), pairi-tan- отстранять, tan-, tanoti тянуть(ся), растягивать(ся), простирать(ся) и т. п., vi-tan- натягивать (тетиву); далее: tȩtiva, тетива, тенето сеть, силок, thenjan, dennen, dehnen растягивать, tenere держать, tenax цепкий, tendere тянуть, растягивать, τανύω, τείνω натягивать (например, лук), растягивать и пр. ( 1065–1066). — Смещение значения тянуть → дергать → рвать могло произойти отчасти по контаминации с tona kænyn отнимать, грабить (см. выше). — Bailey усматривает в tonyn базу tau-, (s)teu- с удлинением -n — taun- — и сближает с ttun- : ttunda отнимать, грабить ( 1960 XXIII 35–36; KhT IV 64–65; Adyar Library Bulletin XXV 5; см. также: 39). Однако дифтонг au перед n сужается, и из tauna- мы получили бы tyn- | tun-, а не ton-, как из gauna-^ — q˳yngūn шерсть и т. п. — База tan- натягивать, растягивать распознается еще в tæn струна и tæn, tænæg тонкий. С наращением -g, -ǰ (tang-, tanǰ-) мы находим этот же корень в tynʒynitinʒun расстилать. III 150; Gr. 60. — 82. The vowel o before n regularly goes back to ā; see , , , , don, , , . That is why ton- should be explained by the causative stem tānaya- from tan-, ten- pull, stretch etc. Cf. tanīdan twist, weave, tatan : tan- weave, tān- : tānt stretch the warp when weaving ( 242), tun- : tönd tear the dough into pieces for cakes ( II 253), tan- in us-tan- stretch out, raise one’s hands, pairi-tan- ban, tan-, tanoti pull (tr., intr.), spread (tr., intr.) etc., vi-tan- draw (a bowstring); further: tȩtiva, tetiva, teneto net, snare, thenjan, dennen, dehnen stretch, tenere hold, tenax tenacious, tendere pull, stretch, τανύω, τείνω draw (a bow), stretch etc. ( 1065–1066). — The shift in the meaning pull → twich → tear could have occured partly due to contamination with tona kænyn take away, rob (see above). — Bailey sees in tonyn the base tau-, (s)teu- with -n-lengthening — taun- — and brings it close to ttun- : ttunda take away, rob ( 1960 XXIII 35–36; KhT IV 64–65; Adyar Library Bulletin XXV 5; see also: 39). However, the diphthong au narrows before n, and from tauna- we would have gotten tyn- | tun-, and not ton-, as from gauna-^ — q˳yngūn wool etc. — The base tan- pull on, stretch is also recognized in tæn string and tæn, tænæg thin. With -g- and -ǰ-augmentation (tang-, tanǰ-) we find the same root in tynʒynitinʒun spread out. III 150; Gr. 60. — 82.
