From tābxāna domus in qua sunt vapores et fumus (), warm winter room, furnace hearth, fireplace hearth, a compound of tāb heat, fire and xāna room. The sound development: tābxana → tawxana → toxona (ā before n → o). But for the second part of the compound cf. the form xana in aʒatxana outhouse. From Persian there are also Turkic (Anatolian Turkish) tapxana 1. tannery, 2. heated shelter for the poor ( III 954), Turkic (Balkar) toxana warm room of the princess ( II 114), tavxana living room (Lezginsko-russkij slovar' [Lezgian-Russian dictionary].
