It goes back to waxšaka- from the base waxš- bending etc., which we find also in the verb i-wæxs-un dislocate (wek-, wenk- bend: 1134—1135). The correspondence wæ- | a- is regular, cf. wæræx | urux, wæxst | uxst etc. (cf.: Bailey, 1960, p. 87). But the correspondence -xs- | -sq- is unusual. On the Iranian ground cf. hūṣa some body part, ōẓ̌a shoulder (from waxša-, waγža-? or from aša- shoulder: 13?). Also cf. vakṣas- breast. — In Ossetic there was another word for shoulder — syfc | sufcæ (from supti-), but it is used only in the expression syfcæj lasyn drag with shoulder.
