Перебой tʼ || pʼ мог произойти на осетинской почве, ср. такие пары как || , ‖ . — Тюркское слово производят от qat слой, ярус и пр. (слоеная лепешка). Если учесть, однако, что слоеность налицо только в некоторых тюркских языках и полностью отсутствует во всех других случаях, связь c qat слой может быть результатом позднейшего осмысления. В действительности же мы имеем дело с древним странствующим кулинарным термином типа xltm ‖ xlmt ‖ slmt, который распознается также в саламата жидкая каша и пр. ( II 571: Unklar). Also (from Uzbek) qatlama sweet layered flatbread (Tadžiksko-russkij slovarʼ Moscow, 1954, p. 487), x́älʼamä, x́aləpʼamä, x́alpʼam (Šagirov. <?oxy_comment_start author="oleg" timestamp="20231031T150224+0300" comment="title is incomplete"?>Ètimologičeskij slovarʼ<?oxy_comment_end ?> [Etymological dictionary] II 118—119), a-x́ampʼal, x́ampʼal, Georgian (Mokhevian) xampʼala ( 108), x́oltʼam, x́altʼam dumpling (Čečensko-ingušsko-russkij slovarʼ [Chechen-Ingush-Russian dictionary]. Grozny, 1962, p. 167), x́altʼam cornflour dumplings ( 67). The alternation tʼ || pʼ could have occurred in Ossetic, cf. such doublets as || , ‖ . — The Turkic word is usually derived from qat layer, tier etc. (layered flatbread). However, if one considers that the layering meaning is only found in some Turkic language and is completely absent in all other cases, the connection with qat layer may be the result of later reanalysis. We are in fact dealing with an ancient wandering culinary term of the type xltm ‖ xlmt ‖ slmt, which is also recognized in salamata watery porridge etc. ( II 571: Unklar).
