Balk. toponim. sl. [The Balkarian toponymical dictionary]. Nalchik, 1970, p. 134) = Ossetic xal-æftawæn place where they cast lots (when they divide cattle or pastures?) Сближаем c alea игральная кость, жребий и относим к специфическим скифо-латинским изоглоссам, как , , и др. ( 27—29, 86—97, 129—131). Начальный х- в осетинском либо протетический, как в , , , , либо отражает латинский (незасвидетельствованный) вариант halea. Ср. такие латинские пары как allex | hallex, alica | halica и др. We bring this word closer to alea dice, lot and attribute it to the specyfic Scythian-Latin izoglosses, like , , , etc. ( 27—29, 86—97, 129—131). The initial х- in Ossetic is either prosthetic, as in , , , , or reflects the Latin (not attested) variant halea. Cf. such Latin pairs as allex | hallex, alica | halica, etc.
