первоначально имело, по-видимому, отношение к сексуальной сфере; ср. <ref type="xr" target="#entry_wælbædæn"/> ‘лобковая область’, ‘область над
половыми органами’ (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_wæl-"/> ‘над’). В этом случае

<etym xml:lang="en">Suffix -<hi rendition="#rend_italic">ag</hi> usually means “able to become something”; if we
throw it away and also prosthetic <hi rendition="#rend_italic">j</hi> appearing before nasals we get the form
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">bædæn</hi> which is not in usage anymore; probably the word concerned the sexual
domain; ср. <ref type="xr" target="#entry_wælbædæn"/> pubic area, area above
genitals (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_wæl-"/> above). In this case the word
*<hi rendition="#rend_italic">bædæn</hi> should trace back to *<hi rendition="#rend_italic">madana</hi>-, cf. <ref type="xr" target="#entry_bæǧnæg"/> from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">maǧna</hi> (nasal dissimilation); cf.
