<etym xml:lang="ru">Вероятно, из <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fæs-cīn-on</hi> буквально „после радости (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_cīn"/>)“. Болезнь эвфемистически названа
„радостью“, так как она, по древним воззрениям, насылается божеством. Чтобы
задобрить это божество, болезни (особенно эпидемические) назывались у многих
народов льстиво-ласкательными именами: „добрая“, „гостья“, „кума“ и т. п. (см.:
<bibl><biblScope xml:lang="ru">Д. <hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Зеленин</hi>. Табу слов… II, § 147

чтобы она не возвращалась. Ср. в связи с этим культ божества оспы (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_Alardy"/>), а также „радость“ по поводу поражения
молнией (под словом <ref type="xr" target="#entry_coppaj"/>). Звуковое развитие
(<hi rendition="#rend_italic">*fæscinon</hi><hi rendition="#rend_italic">fæstinon</hi>) ясно: после <hi rendition="#rend_italic">s</hi> произошел переход <hi rendition="#rend_italic">c</hi> в <hi rendition="#rend_italic">t</hi>
как в <ref type="xr" target="#entry_īsty"/> ‘что-либо’ из <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*iscy</hi>, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_fæstæ"/> ‘позади’, ‘после’ из <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*fæscæ</hi> (др.иран.

<etym xml:lang="en">Probably, from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fæs-cīn-on</hi> literally after the joy (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_cīn"/>). Illness is euphemistically called joy,
as it is, according to ancient beliefs, sent by a deity. To appease this deity,
diseases (especially epidemic ones) were called among many peoples by flattering
names: kind, guest, godfather etc. (see: <bibl><biblScope xml:lang="en">D. <hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Zelenin</hi>. Taboo of words
… II, § 147 ff. Col. of Anthrop. and ethnograph. Museum,
IX</biblScope></bibl>. — <bibl><biblScope xml:lang="en">W. <hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Havers</hi>. Neuere Literatur zum Sprachtabu. 1946, p.
90—95</biblScope></bibl>). It was especially important to appease the
leaving illness so that it did not return. Cf. in this regard, the cult of the
smallpox deity (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_Alardy"/>), and also the joy of
being struck by lightning (under the word <ref type="xr" target="#entry_coppaj"/>). The sound development (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">*fæscinon</hi><hi rendition="#rend_italic">fæstinon</hi>) is clear: there was
the change of <hi rendition="#rend_italic">c</hi> to <hi rendition="#rend_italic">t</hi> after <hi rendition="#rend_italic">s</hi> as in <ref type="xr" target="#entry_īsty"/> something from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*iscy</hi>, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_fæstæ"/> behind, after from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*fæscæ</hi> (Old Iranian
