it had been smoked long before Europeans arrived. In one Native American (Caribbean)
dialect, <w>tabaco</w> meant <gloss><q>leaves rolled up into a pipe</q></gloss>. Hence

<w>tabaco</w></mentioned> and its cognates in the languages of Europe and Asia,
