<etym xml:lang="ru">Собственно „поклявшийся“, от <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ard xæryn</hi> ‘клясться’ (см. под
<ref type="xr" target="#entry_ard"/>). Так назывались люди, торжественно
поклявшиеся друг другу в вечной дружбе с соблюдением определенного обряда. Обряд
побратимства заключался в новое время в том, что побратимы выпивали из одного
бокала, предварительно опустив в него золотую или серебряную вещь. Предания и
эпос сохраняют память о более сложных церемониях при побратимстве: смешение в
бокале крови обоих участников, торжественная клятва над огнем и пр.%n<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_ОЯФ_I"/><biblScope>571</biblScope></bibl>.</etym>
<etym xml:lang="en">It is in fact one who has sworn, derived from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ard xæryn</hi>
to swear (see <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ard"/>). People who have solemnly
sworn eternal friendship to each other observing of a special ceremony were
called that way. In modern times a blood oath was a ceremony where blood
brothers put into a cup silver or gold thing and then drank from this cup. There
is information about more complex blood oaths in legends and epic literature:
for example, mixing of the blood of the both participants, solemn swearing in
front of fire etc.%n<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_ОЯФ_I"/><biblScope>571</biblScope></bibl>.</etym>
