<etym xml:lang="en">Like other basic kinship terms, it is a common Indo-European
word. The singular stem <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fid-</hi> apparently traces back to old nominative case
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">pitā</hi>, while the plural stem <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fidæl-</hi> traces back to <hi rendition="#rend_italic">pitar-</hi>. It is
