<etym xml:lang="ru">Может быть, восходит к <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*vi-ul-</hi> (с вторично возникшим <hi rendition="#rend_italic">v</hi>
между гласными <hi rendition="#rend_italic">i</hi> и <hi rendition="#rend_italic">u</hi>), где <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ul-</hi> || <hi rendition="#rend_italic">val-</hi> восходит к и.е.
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">*vel-</hi>, наличному в <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d299e223" xml:id="mentioned_d299e172" xml:lang="cu"><lang/>

<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d299e247" xml:id="mentioned_d299e197" xml:lang="ae"><lang/>

<gloss><q>волна</q></gloss></mentioned>).
следует объяснить либо исходя из производной формы <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*urya-</hi> (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">ry</hi><hi rendition="#rend_italic">I</hi>),
<hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Миллер</hi> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Miller._Gr."/><biblScope>34, 62</biblScope></bibl>)
в. <hi rendition="#rend_italic">pūlla</hi>
‘шишка’, ирл. <hi rendition="#rend_italic">bolach</hi> ‘пузырь’ (и.е.
<ref type="xr" target="#entry_ūlæn"/>.</etym>
<etym xml:lang="en">May go back to <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*vi-ul-</hi> (with <hi rendition="#rend_italic">v</hi> of secondary
origin between vowels <hi rendition="#rend_italic">i</hi> и <hi rendition="#rend_italic">u</hi>), where <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ul-</hi> || <hi rendition="#rend_italic">val-</hi> traces back to
Indo-European <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*vel-</hi>, which is present in <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d299e172" xml:id="mentioned_d299e223" xml:lang="cu"><lang/>
<w>vlъna</w></mentioned>, <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d299e178" xml:id="mentioned_d299e228" xml:lang="ru"><lang/>

<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d299e186" xml:id="mentioned_d299e236" xml:lang="de"><lang/>
<w>Welle</w>
<gloss><q>волна</q></gloss></mentioned> etc. The same root is on the strong
ablaut stage — in Ossetic <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ūlæn"/> wave. Because
of Iranian rhotacism, one would expect <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*ur-</hi> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*var-</hi> in Ossetic (cf.
<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d299e197" xml:id="mentioned_d299e247" xml:lang="ae"><lang/>
<w>vari-</w>
<gloss><q>gulf</q></gloss></mentioned>, <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d299e205" xml:id="mentioned_d299e255" xml:lang="ae"><w>varəmi-</w>
<gloss><q>wave</q></gloss></mentioned>). That is why the presence of <hi rendition="#rend_italic">l</hi>
in Ossetic should be explained either by a derivative form <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*urya-</hi> (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">ry</hi>
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">I</hi>), or by admitting the influence of some neighbouring non-Iranian
Indo-European languages (Slavic? Germanic?). Ws. <hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Miller</hi> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Miller._Gr."/><biblScope>34,
62</biblScope></bibl>) gives another etymology: Gothic <hi rendition="#rend_italic">uf-bauljan</hi> to
inflate, Old High German <hi rendition="#rend_italic">pūlla</hi> cone, Irish <hi rendition="#rend_italic">bolach</hi> bubble
(Indo-European <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*bheul-</hi>). This etymology is unacceptable because of the
following reasons: 1. there are no reliable Indo-Iranian parallels, 2.
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">ivylyn</hi> is separated from <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ūlæn"/> wave. See
<ref type="xr" target="#entry_ūlæn"/>.</etym>
