<etym xml:lang="en">Words related to marriage are often unsayable and changed to

euphemisms. Ossetians do not call their wives <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ūs"/> ‘wife’, and husbands <ref type="xr" target="#entry_moj"/> ‘husband’. It is

probable that <hi rendition="#rend_italic">kais</hi> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">kajes</hi> is an euphemism, which was formed from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ka</hi>
|
|||
|
+ <hi rendition="#rend_italic">is</hi> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ka</hi> + <hi rendition="#rend_italic">es</hi> ‘who-be’, i.e. ‘someone’. Cf. <ref type="xr" target="#entry_īs-"/>-<ref type="xr" target="#entry_ḱī"/> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">es-ke</hi>
