<etym xml:lang="ru">Старое сращение преверба <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fær-</hi>, <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fæl-</hi> с глаголом <ref type="xr" target="#entry_sūʒyn"/> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">soʒun</hi> означающим самостоятельно
‘сжигать’ (← <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*para-sauč-</hi>). Странная, по первому впечатлению, семантика
(‘сжигать’ || ‘процеживать’) решительно поддерживается другими фактами
осетинского языка: <ref type="xr" target="#entry_syǧdæg"/> ‘чистый’, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ræsūg"/> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ræsog</hi> ‘прозрачный’, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ræsūǧd"/> ‘красивый’ заключают в себе ту же основу <hi rendition="#rend_italic">suk-</hi>
‘огонь’, которую мы находим в <ref type="xr" target="#entry_sūʒyn"/> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">soʒun</hi>
‘жечь’. В этих словах отражены древние представления, по которым понятия
‘чистоты’, ‘красоты’, ‘прозрачности’ были неотделимы от понятия ‘огня’, не
мыслились вне связи с ‘огнем’, как универсальной очищающей стихией. Связь
„чистоты“ с „огнем“ прослеживается и в других родственных языках: ср. <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d4378e257" xml:id="mentioned_d4378e144" xml:lang="kho"><lang/>

<etym xml:lang="en">The old contraction of the preverb <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fær-</hi>, <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fæl-</hi> with the
verb <ref type="xr" target="#entry_sūʒyn"/> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">soʒun</hi> which itself means
burn (← <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*para-sauč-</hi>). The strange, at first impression, semantics (burn
|| filter) is strongly supported by other facts of the Ossetic language: the
words <ref type="xr" target="#entry_syǧdæg"/> clean, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ræsūg"/> | <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ræsog</hi> transparent, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ræsūǧd"/> beautiful consist of the same stem <hi rendition="#rend_italic">suk-</hi>

burn. These words reflect the ancient ideas, according to which the concepts
of purity, beauty, transparency were inseparable from the concept of
fire, were not thought of outside of connection with fire as a universal
purifying element. The connection between "purity" and "fire" can be traced in
other related languages: cf. <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d4378e144" xml:id="mentioned_d4378e257" xml:lang="kho"><lang/>
