‘зима’). Возводится к <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*pati-zyaka-</hi>, где <hi rendition="#rend_italic">pati</hi> — предлог со значением ‘к’,
а <hi rendition="#rend_italic">zyaka</hi> — от <hi rendition="#rend_italic">zyam</hi> ‘зима’: осень определяется как время года, когда дело

<etym xml:lang="en">Iranian word, like the names of other seasons (see <ref type="xr" target="#entry_walʒæg"/> ‘spring’, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_særd"/> ‘summer’, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_zymæg"/>
‘winter’). It traces back to <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*pati-zyaka-</hi>, where <hi rendition="#rend_italic">pati</hi> is a preposition
with the meaning ‘to’, and <hi rendition="#rend_italic">zyaka</hi> is from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">zyam</hi> ‘winter’: autumn is
defined as the time of year when it is going on for winter. The form
development: <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*pati-zyaka-</hi> → <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*fajzyak</hi> → <hi rendition="#rend_italic">fæzzæg</hi> (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">pati</hi> → <hi rendition="#rend_italic">faj</hi>,
as in <ref type="xr" target="#entry_fajnūst"/>; <hi rendition="#rend_italic">jz</hi> → <hi rendition="#rend_italic">zz</hi>, as in <ref type="xr" target="#entry_bazzajyn"/> from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">bajzajyn</hi> etc.).
