институтом. Отношения между хозяином (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_fysym"/>) и гостем
были строго регламентированы обычаем и включали не только предоставление гостю крова и
пищи, но и неограниченное покровительство и защиту даже с риском для жизни и благополучия
хозяина. Гость, будь он незнакомец, будь он даже враг, с того момента, как он переступил
порог дома, становился священной особой. Грузинский историк XVIII в. <name>Вахушти</name>
писал об осетинах: <quote><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">Они умеют воздавать почет
чужестранным гостям и невредимо охранять их; никто не смеет причинить вред чьему-либо
гостю, ибо за него положит голову вся фамилия хозяина</q></quote>. Хозяин,
покусившийся на жизнь гостя или допустивший, чтобы в его доме гость стал жертвой насилия,
получал позорящую кличку <mentioned xml:lang="os"><w>wazægxor</w>
<gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">гостеед</q></gloss></mentioned>. Клеймо
ложилось не только на него, но на всю его фамилию. Многие устойчивые выражения, в которых
участвует слово <oRef/>, становятся понятными только с учетом соответствующих реалий. Так,
обращение к небожителям с мольбой сделать кого-либо своим гостем (<q rendition="#rend_doublequotes"><phr>de wazæg fæwæd!</phr></q>) означало: <gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">да будет он под твоим всесильным покровительством и
защитой!</q></gloss></note>
<note xml:lang="en" type="comment">. Hospitality was an important social institution among
the Ossetians. The relationship between the host (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_fysym"/>)
and the guest were strictly regulated by custom and included not only providing the guest
with accommodation and food, but also unlimited patronage and protection even with risk
for the life and well-being of the host. As for the guest, no matter if he was a stranger,
even if he was an enemy, became a sacred person as soon as he crossed the doorstep. The
Georgian 18th-century historian <name>Vakhushti</name> wrote of the Ossetians:
<quote><?oxy_comment_start author="oleg" timestamp="20231114T141758+0300" comment="хорошо бы найти англ. перевод"?><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">They are able to honour foreign guests and protect them
from harm; no one dare harm anyones guest, for all the hosts clan will lay their
heads down for him</q><?oxy_comment_end ?></quote>. A host who made an attempt at the
life of his guest or who let his guest become a victim of violence in his house, received
the shameful moniker <mentioned xml:lang="os"><w>wazægxor</w>
<gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">guest-eater</q></gloss></mentioned>. This
stigma was placed not only on the host proper, but on his whole clan. Many idioms with the
word <oRef/> are only understandable when considering the corresponding realia. Thus, an
address to the deities with a prayer to make someone their guest (<q rendition="#rend_doublequotes"><phr>de wazæg fæwæd!</phr></q>) meant: <gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">may he be under your all-powerful patronage and
protection!</q></gloss></note>
