<etym xml:lang="ru">Из <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Ʒæwægi-ǧæw</hi> ‘село Дзауага’, по имени основателя.
„Владикавказ называется по-осетински Дзавагау, потому что жил там прежде
Осетинский старшина, именуемый Дзауг или Дзаваг“ (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Шегрен"/><biblScope>559</biblScope></bibl>). Имя
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">Ʒæwæg</hi>—осетинское, представляет причастную форму от <ref type="xr" target="#entry_cæwyn"/> ‘идти’ и значит, стало быть, „ходок“. Ср. <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d1246e100" xml:id="mentioned_d1246e86" xml:lang="xsc"><lang/>

<etym xml:lang="en">From <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Ʒæwægi-ǧæw</hi> village of Dzawag, named after the
founder. “Vladikavkaz is called in Ossetic Dzavagiǧau, because the Ossetian
leader named Dzaug or Dzavag lived there before” (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Шегрен"/><biblScope>559</biblScope></bibl>). The name
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">Ʒæwæg</hi> is Ossetic, it is a participle form of the verb <ref type="xr" target="#entry_cæwyn"/> go and therefore “walker”. Cf. <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d1246e86" xml:id="mentioned_d1246e100" xml:lang="xsc"><lang/>
