word should be viewed as an old borrowing from Russian <hi rendition="#rend_italic">kъniga</hi>, to which it is closer in form and
meaning than to Armenian <hi rendition="#rend_italic">knik</hi>. In order to
explain the Ossetic sound form, one should assume the metathesis of vowels <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*kuniga</hi><hi rendition="#rend_italic">*kinugæ</hi>, cf. the variation <ref type="xr" target="#entry_mystūlæg"/>
and <ref type="xr" target="#entry_mustælæg"/> weasel.%n<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Miller._Gr."/><biblScope>11, 41</biblScope></bibl>.—
