<gloss><q>злой дух</q></gloss>, <gloss><q>демон</q></gloss>. Это служит
одним из доказательств, что предки осетин, скифы, остались чужды зороастризму
(см. об этом также под словом <ref type="xr" target="#entry_wæjyg"><w>wæjyg</w>
<gloss><q>великан</q></gloss></ref>). Со временем, может быть под влиянием
христианства, <q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">семь богов</q> (в форме <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ævdīw"><w xml:lang="os-x-iron">ævdīw</w><w xml:lang="os-x-digor">ævdew</w></ref>) также обратились в <gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">демона</q></gloss>. Но в эпосе

The Alan cult of the <gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">seven
gods</q></gloss> is evidenced by the Alanic name of Theodosia <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d4771e168" xml:lang="xln"><w>Ἀρδάβδα</w>
<gloss><q>(the city of) seven gods</q></gloss>

Ossetian holy place <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d4771e134" xml:id="mentioned_d4771e181" xml:lang="os"><lang/>

<oRef>Avdīwag</oRef> the Iranian <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d4771e146" xml:id="mentioned_d4771e193" xml:lang="ira"><w>daiva</w>
<note type="comment" xml:lang="en">retains the pre-Zoroastrian, common Aryan
meaning</note>
<gloss><q>deity</q></gloss></mentioned>, but not the Zoroastrian
<gloss><q>evil spirit</q></gloss>, <gloss><q>demon</q></gloss>. This
serves as one of the indications that the ancestors of the Ossetians, the
Scythians, remained alien to Zoroastrianism (on this also see under the word
<ref type="xr" target="#entry_wæjyg"><w>wæjyg</w>
<gloss><q>giant</q></gloss></ref>). Over time, perhaps under the influence
of Christianity, the <q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">seven gods</q> (in the
form <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ævdīw"><w xml:lang="os-x-iron">ævdīw</w><w xml:lang="os-x-digor">ævdew</w></ref>) also turned into a <gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">demon</q></gloss>. However, the old
meaning of <mentioned xml:lang="ira"><w>daiva-</w>
<gloss><q>god</q></gloss></mentioned> has been preserved in the epics. Cf.
