всей Осетии. Празднества в его честь справлялись несколько раз в году, особенно широко и
торжественно — в ноябре. Ни одно застолье не обходилось без обращенных к нему молений и
без исполнения посвященной ему песни-гимна (<mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><phr>Wastyrǵijy zaræg</phr></mentioned>). Отправлявшегося в дорогу напутствовали:

рассказам, Уастырджи разъезжает инкогнито по земле, испытывает людей, помогает бедным,
награждает добродетель и карает зло. Таков, например, рассказ <q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">Уастырджи и три брата</q> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Миллер_Вс._ОЭ">ОЭ</ref>
<biblScope>I 156—158</biblScope></bibl>) и <mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><phr>Was­tyrǵi æmæ Kʼ˳ydary zærond læg</phr>

старик</q></gloss></mentioned>. Популярны были также сказания об участии Уастырджи |
Уасгерги вместе с другими небожителями в земледельческих работах (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#src_ИАС"/>
<biblScope>II 318—322</biblScope></bibl> и др.), ср. аналогичные украинские и
южнорусские апокрифические сказания о Христе, Богоматери и апостолах
(<bibl><author>Сумцов</author>. <title>Очерки истории южнорусских апокрифических

сл.</biblScope></bibl>). В нартовском эпосе выступает нередко как соблазнитель
женщин</note>
<note xml:lang="en" type="comment">. The patron of men and the main male occupation:
military and raiding expeditions (see <ref type="xr" target="#entry_balc"/>). With time he
became the patron of travelers in general. For women his name was banned, they called him
<mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><w>Lægty ʒwar</w>
<gloss><q>Deity of Men</q></gloss></mentioned>. He carries the epithets <ref type="xr" target="#entry_syǧzærīn"><w>syǧzærīn</w>
<gloss><q>golden</q></gloss></ref>, <mentioned xml:lang="os"><w>fændagsar</w>
<gloss><q>way-leader</q></gloss></mentioned>. Sanctuaries dedicated to him were
scattered all over Ossetia. Holidays in his honour were celebrated several times a year,
particularly widely and solemnly in November. No feast could be left without prayers
directed at him and the performance of the song-hymn dedicated to him (<mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><phr>Wastyrǵijy zaræg</phr></mentioned>). One who embarked on a
journey was told when parting ways: <mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><s>Wastyrǵi — de
mbal!</s>
<gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">(may) Wastyrji be your
comrade!</q></gloss></mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><s>Wastyrǵi dæ raxīʒ
fars cæwæd!</s>
<gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">may Wastyrji walk at your right
side!</q></gloss></mentioned>. He was imagined as a horseman in a white felt coat on a
white horse (<bibl>Ws. <author>Miller</author>. <ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Миллер_Вс._ОЭ"></ref>
<biblScope>II 239—243, 281—284</biblScope></bibl>). According to some songs and stories,
Wastyrji roams the earth incognito, tests people, helps the poor, rewards virtue and
punishes evil. Such, for example, is the story <q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">Wastyrji
and the three brothers</q> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Миллер_Вс._ОЭ"></ref>
<biblScope>I 156—158</biblScope></bibl>) and <mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><phr>Was­tyrǵi æmæ Kʼ˳ydary zærond læg</phr>
<gloss><q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">Wastyrji and the old Kudar
man</q></gloss></mentioned>. Popular tales also involved Wastyrji | Wasgergi
participating in agricultural work together with other divine beings (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#src_ИАС"/>
<biblScope>II 318—322</biblScope></bibl> etc.), cf. analogous Ukrainian and south
Russian apocryphal tales of Christ, Virgin Mary and the apostles
(<bibl><author>Sumcov</author>. <title>Očerki istorii južnorusskix apokrifičeskix
skazanij i pesen</title> [Sketches on the history of southern Russian apocryphal tales
and songs]. <date>1887</date>, <biblScope>pp. 27 ff., 44 ff.</biblScope></bibl>). In the
