Засвидетельствовано еще у псевдо-Моисея Хоренского в его „Географии“ (VII в.) в
форме <hi rendition="#rend_italic">tikor</hi> и в сложном этническом термине <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Aštikor</hi> (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">as-digor</hi>).
Любопытно, что дигорцы в этом тексте противоставляются аланам: „За Тикор живут
аланы в местности Ардоз“ (<bibl><biblScope xml:lang="ru">Geographie de Moise de
Соrène… 1881, стр. 36</biblScope></bibl>). Этим
подтверждается, что название <hi rendition="#rend_italic">digor</hi> было связано по происхождению с каким-то
племенем, отличным от иранцев-алан. Весьма вероятно, что корень <hi rendition="#rend_italic">dig</hi>-
тождествен с <hi rendition="#rend_italic">dəg</hi>- в <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d2772e278" xml:id="mentioned_d2772e196" xml:lang="os"><lang/>
<w>a-dəǧ-e</w>

языках Кавказа: сванском (-<hi rendition="#rend_italic">ar</hi>), аварском, лакском, даргинском и др. Ср.

<etym xml:lang="en">It is an old local (Caucasian) tribe name. It is attested as
early as in pseudo-Movses Khorenatsi's “Geography“ (VII в.) in the form
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">tikor</hi> and in a complex ethnical term <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Aštikor</hi> (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">as-digor</hi>). It is
curious that Digor people are opposed to Alan people: “Alans live behind Tikor
in the Ardoz area” (<bibl><biblScope xml:lang="en">Geographie
de Moise de Соrène… 1881, p. 36</biblScope></bibl>). This confirms
that the name <hi rendition="#rend_italic">digor</hi> was originally associated with some tribe other than the
Iranian Alans. It is quite probable that the root <hi rendition="#rend_italic">dig</hi>- is identical to
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">dəg</hi>- in <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d2772e196" xml:id="mentioned_d2772e278" xml:lang="os"><lang/>
<w>a-dəǧ-e</w>

-<hi rendition="#rend_italic">or</hi> could be a plural marker. Cf. plural forms ending with -<hi rendition="#rend_italic">r</hi>, -<hi rendition="#rend_italic">l</hi> in
many Caucasian languages: Svan (-<hi rendition="#rend_italic">ar</hi>), Avar, Lak, Dargwa etc. Cf. also the
formant -<hi rendition="#rend_italic">r</hi> for the absolute form of nouns in languages of Adyghe group
(<bibl><author>Turchaninov, Tsagov.</author><biblScope xml:lang="en">Grammar of the Kabardian language. 1940, p. 55

century the term <hi rendition="#rend_italic">digor</hi> is often found among travelers and in official
documents, often in the form <hi rendition="#rend_italic">dugor</hi>. It is well known to the current and
