е. новое поколение, идущее на смену старшему. Весьма редкий суффикс <hi rendition="#rend_italic">-æd</hi>

можно, кажется, сблизить с суффиксом <hi rendition="#rend_italic">-æt</hi> в <hi rendition="#rend_italic">cæw-æt</hi> [<ref type="xr" target="#entry_cæwæt"/>] ‘потомство’ (от <ref type="xr" target="#entry_cæwyn"/>), <hi rendition="#rend_italic">mæl-æt</hi> [<ref type="xr" target="#entry_mælæt"/>] ‘смерть’ (от <ref type="xr" target="#entry_mælyn"/>) и нек. др.</etym>

(coming) from behind’, i.e. the new generation, which will replace the older

one. This rather rare suffix <hi rendition="#rend_italic">-æd</hi> can probably be related to the suffix

<hi rendition="#rend_italic">-æt</hi> in <hi rendition="#rend_italic">cæw-æt</hi> [<ref type="xr" target="#entry_cæwæt"/>] ‘posterity’ (from

<ref type="xr" target="#entry_cæwyn"/>), <hi rendition="#rend_italic">mæl-æt</hi> [<ref type="xr" target="#entry_mælæt"/>] ‘death’ (from <ref type="xr" target="#entry_mælyn"/>) and some others.</etym>
