<etym xml:lang="en">A hedgehog is among the <q rendition="#rend_doublequotes">honourable</q>
wild animals, which were known by Indo-European peoples in their ancestral home, just like
a wolf (see <w type="rec">wærg</w>), a bear (see <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ars"/>), a
fox (см. <ref type="xr" target="#entry_rūvas"/>), an otter (see <ref type="xr" target="#entry_wyrd_1"/>) and some others. According to its root and derivation, <oRef/>
is close to <mentioned xml:lang="xcl"><lang/>
<w>(w)ozni</w></mentioned> (Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine"><w type="rec">eǵhinos</w><w type="rec">oǵhinos</w></mentioned>), cf. <mentioned xml:lang="grc"><lang/>
