предполагает в начальном <hi rendition="#rend_italic">īz-</hi> преверб иран. <hi rendition="#rend_italic">uz-</hi>, а <hi rendition="#rend_italic">gard</hi> сближает с
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">gar-</hi>, так как
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">гореть</hi>, как <hi rendition="#rend_italic">из-жога</hi> от <hi rendition="#rend_italic">жечь</hi>); для семантики ср. груз. <hi rendition="#rend_italic">gulis cʼva</hi>
‘изжога’, буквально „горение сердца“.</etym>
<etym xml:lang="en"><hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Ws. Miller</hi> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Миллер_Вс._ОЭ"/><biblScope>II 67</biblScope></bibl>)
suggests that the initial <hi rendition="#rend_italic">īz-</hi> is related to Iranian preverb <hi rendition="#rend_italic">uz-</hi>, and
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">gard</hi> is related to the root <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*gar-</hi> to swallow. The first is not
possible, since Digor form starts with <hi rendition="#rend_italic">ez-</hi> (and not with <hi rendition="#rend_italic">iz-</hi>); <hi rendition="#rend_italic">-gard</hi>
also cannot be traced back to Iranian <hi rendition="#rend_italic">gar-</hi>, since the Ossetic form would
have looked like <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*ǧard</hi>. This word looks like a Slavic borrowing; the Old
Russian prototype might have been <hi rendition="#rend_italic">*iz-garъ</hi> (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">garъ</hi> from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">goretʼ</hi> to be
on fire, as <hi rendition="#rend_italic">iz-žoga</hi> from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">žečʼ</hi> to burn (sth.)); for semantics cf.
Georgian <hi rendition="#rend_italic">gulis cʼva</hi> hearthburn, literally “the burning of heart”.</etym>
