<m>a-</m></mentioned> with the verb <ref type="xr" target="#entry_ūdyn"><w xml:lang="os-x-iron">ūdyn</w><w xml:lang="os-x-digor">odyn</w>
<gloss><q>to endeavour</q></gloss></ref>, which is also used on its own. The original
meaning of <oRef/> is without doubt ambivalent: <gloss><q>act to smb.s benefit or
detriment</q></gloss>; this is confirmed by the existence of such expressions as
<mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><phr>xærzaūdæn kænyn</phr>
<gloss><q>act to the benefit</q></gloss></mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="os-x-iron"><phr>fydaūdæn kænyn</phr>
<gloss><q>act to the detriment</q></gloss></mentioned>, where the originally dual
meaning of <oRef/> is specified in two opposite directions using <ref type="xr" target="#entry_xærz-_2"><w>xærz-</w>
<gloss><q>good</q></gloss></ref> and <ref type="xr" target="#entry_fyd_3"><w>fyd</w>
<gloss><q>bad</q></gloss></ref>. In modern usage, the positive meaning prevailed over
the negative, as also seen in other cases, cf. <ref type="xr" target="#entry_arfæ"><w>arfæ</w>
<gloss><q>blessing</q></gloss></ref>, <ref type="xr" target="#entry_warzyn"><w>warzyn</w>
