<gloss><q>ash</q></gloss></mentioned>, goes back to<mentioned xml:lang="ira"><w type="rec">kau-taka-</w> (<w>kauθaka-</w>)</mentioned>. The formant <c>-ka-</c> gave
rise not to the regular <c>-g(æ)</c> but to <c>-xæ</c>, like in Digor <ref type="xr" target="#entry_zænxæ"><w>zænxæ</w>
<gloss><q>ground</q></gloss></ref> from <mentioned xml:lang="ira"><w type="rec">zamka-</w></mentioned>. The initial meaning of the base <mentioned xml:lang="ira"><w type="rec">kut-</w> (<w type="rec">kuθ-</w>)</mentioned> it was probably <q>shell</q>.
